In the standard HTML version, diacritical marks, such as accents or cedillas, precede the letters they modify. A circumflex (^) can also stand for a hacek (a v-shaped mark above the letter) or a macron, and the Turkish "dotless i" is represented with an extra dot (ï). The low tone in Chinese (Guóyu/Putônghuà) is left unmarked. A dot under a letter is represented by an underline. A dot above the character is represented by an asterisk (*).
